Essential Oxygen Certified BR Organic Brushing Rinse, All Natural Mouthwash for Whiter Teeth, Fresher Breath, and Happier Gums, Alcohol-Free Oral Care, Peppermint, 16 Ounce, Package may vary

I got a sample of this in Rawbox (a subscription box) a few months back and kept it around but didn't use it for a long time. And then, over the weekend, my gums were pretty inflamed (I had been drinking too much diet soda and the acid was causing problems). I remember using peroxide mouthwashes when I had braces and got sores from the brackets and wires, so I figured I would give this a try.
One other thing to mention, I'm just using this as mouthwash. I am still brushing with regular toothpaste (I have some tooth damage from grinding my teeth back when I was in grad school and I really need fluoride), but I use this as a mouthwash periodically during the day, really focusing on the area with the most inflamed gums (maybe 3-4 times per day, just when I feel like I need it). And, after only about two days, I am already a lot better -- very little pain (really, almost none) and no more bleeding gums when I brush my teeth. The sensitivity in that area is going away, too.
This is very gentle and it is not strongly flavored. You do get a mild minty/herbal flavor from the essential oils, but it is definitely tolerable. This is much more pleasant to rinse with than, say, Listerine, and it does not contain alcohol. It foams a bit; that's the hydrogen peroxide doing its work. (Due to the hydrogen peroxide, make sure you don't swallow this.)
This is not going to protect your gums if you keep doing the things that got you into trouble in the first place. (Sadly, I have had to give up diet soda for now.) And if anything is hurting/bleeding in your mouth for more than a few days, you should really get to a dentist. But if you catch your problem early, like I did, this can be part of a combination strategy for getting your gums back to health.
I would agree that this helps freshen the breath -- the peroxide kills germs and the essential oils probably contribute a bit, as well. I can't say whether it whitens the teeth after only two days, I'm mostly using this for the health of my gums. Any whitening down the road will be an added benefit. For what it's worth, this is a clear, non-viscous liquid.
Anyway, glad I decided to give this a chance, as it has really been helping.
Understanding Hydrogen Peroxide in Oral Care
Hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) is a natural antiseptic and oxidizing agent widely used in oral care. When it comes into contact with oral tissues, it releases oxygen bubbles that help mechanically remove debris, bacteria, and plaque. This effervescence also reaches areas that brushing alone may miss, providing a deeper clean. In the context of gum inflammation (gingivitis), hydrogen peroxide can reduce swelling and bleeding by killing harmful bacteria and promoting a healthier oral environment. The user's experience highlights this: after using an organic hydrogen peroxide mouthwash, inflamed gums improved significantly within two days, with pain and bleeding subsiding.
Why Choose an Alcohol-Free Mouthwash?
Traditional mouthwashes often contain alcohol (e.g., ethanol) as a solvent for flavoring agents and to provide a “burning” sensation that many associate with effectiveness. However, alcohol can dry out the oral mucosa, disrupt the natural balance of oral flora, and exacerbate issues like dry mouth (xerostomia). Dry mouth reduces saliva production, which is essential for neutralizing acids and protecting teeth from decay. An alcohol-free mouthwash, like the one reviewed, avoids these drawbacks. It uses gentle ingredients such as organic essential oils and aloe vera to soothe tissues while still combating bad breath and germs. The reviewer specifically notes that this mouthwash is “much more pleasant to rinse with than, say, Listerine, and it does not contain alcohol.”
Key Ingredients and Their Benefits
Hydrogen Peroxide – As mentioned, it provides antimicrobial and whitening effects. The review mentions that the mouthwash “foams a bit; that's the hydrogen peroxide doing its work.” This indicates an active, oxygen-releasing formula that can help break down stains and kill odor-causing bacteria.
Aloe Vera – Known for its soothing and anti-inflammatory properties, aloe vera helps calm irritated gum tissues. It is often used in oral care products to reduce redness and sensitivity.
Organic Essential Oils – Peppermint oil, for example, provides a refreshing flavor and natural antibacterial action. The reviewer describes a “mild minty/herbal flavor from the essential oils” that is tolerable and pleasant compared to harsh synthetic flavors.
No Fluoride, Glycerin, or Sodium Lauryl Sulfate – Some users prefer avoiding fluoride (e.g., those who receive fluoride from other sources or have concerns about overexposure). Glycerin can leave a coating on teeth, and SLS can cause irritation for sensitive mouths. This product caters to those seeking a cleaner, more natural formulation.
How to Use This Mouthwash for Gum Health
The reviewer used the product as a mouthwash several times daily, focusing on the most inflamed area. Because it contains hydrogen peroxide, it should not be swallowed. A typical routine: shake the bottle, pour about 2–3 teaspoons (or as directed), swish for 30–60 seconds, then spit. Using it 3–4 times a day was effective for the reviewer, but individuals should adjust based on their needs. The reviewer also continued using a fluoride toothpaste for cavity protection, indicating this product is meant to complement, not replace, regular brushing with fluoride if needed.
Conditions That Benefit from This Product
Gum inflammation (gingivitis) caused by factors like acidic diet (e.g., excessive diet soda), poor oral hygiene, or braces can improve with hydrogen peroxide rinses. The reviewer cites “drinking too much diet soda and the acid was causing problems.” The acid from soda can erode enamel and irritate gums. The mouthwash's soothing and antibacterial properties help the gums recover. However, the reviewer wisely notes: “This is not going to protect your gums if you keep doing the things that got you into trouble in the first place.” So it should be part of a holistic approach including dietary changes and regular dental checkups.
Additional Advantages: Whitening and Breath Freshening
While the primary use for the reviewer was gum health, the product also claims whitening and breath freshening. Hydrogen peroxide is a known whitening agent that can lift surface stains. The reviewer could not confirm whitening after only two days but considered it a potential future benefit. For breath, the peroxide kills bacteria that cause bad breath, and the essential oils contribute a fresh scent. This multipurpose action makes it a versatile addition to an oral care routine.
Product Formulation and Quality Commitment
The brand Essential Oxygen emphasizes clean ingredients: no alcohol, fluoride, glycerin, sugars, SLS, or other objectionable additives. It is vegan, gluten-free, BPA-free packaging, non-GMO, and not tested on animals. The oxygen-based formula is said to be “planet positive,” meaning its ingredients and manufacturing aim for environmental friendliness. These attributes align with growing consumer demand for ethical, sustainable products without compromising efficacy.
Safety Precautions
Because of the hydrogen peroxide content, avoid swallowing. Keep out of reach of children. If you have persistent gum bleeding, pain, or other oral symptoms for more than a few days, consult a dentist. The product is intended for maintenance and symptom relief, not as a substitute for professional care. Pregnant or nursing women should also consult a healthcare provider before use.
Overall Recommendations from Real User Experience
Based on the review, this mouthwash is effective for early-stage gum inflammation when used consistently. It is gentle, well-tolerated, and offers a better sensory experience than many commercial mouthwashes. Combining it with proper brushing, flossing, and limiting acidic beverages can lead to noticeable improvements in gum health and oral freshness. For those seeking a natural, alcohol-free alternative with proven active ingredients, Essential Oxygen Organic Brushing Rinse is a solid choice.
